Following a disheartening defeat at Headingley, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has voiced his support for the team's lower order batsmen, despite their collapses contributing to the loss.
After dominating the Test for a significant period, India succumbed to a 371-run chase by England on the final day. This marks India's seventh defeat in their last nine Tests.
India's batting performance was marred by two critical collapses. The team scored a total of 835 runs, with five batsmen achieving centuries, including Rishabh Pant who scored a century in each innings.
The initial collapse prevented India from establishing a commanding lead after winning the toss. The second left them defending a chaseable 371.
Shubman Gill, who celebrated his captaincy debut with a century in the first innings, revealed that the team was aiming for a target "around 435". Gambhir felt that a first innings score of "570, 580" could have ensured dominance.
However, Gambhir defended the lower order, despite Shardul Thakur's aggressive dismissals and Prasidh Krishna's ill-fated slog sweep.
"It's not that they weren't applying themselves. Sometimes people fail. And that's okay," Gambhir stated. "It's not like they're not working hard in the nets...Hopefully they'll learn, and hopefully we'll get better performances from our tail."
Another significant factor in India's defeat was their substandard catching. Seven catches were dropped throughout the match, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being a repeat offender. Ben Duckett, who was dropped by Jaiswal, went on to score a crucial 149. Gill acknowledged the need for improved standards in this area.
Gill commented, "Chances don't come easy, especially on wickets like these, and we dropped quite a few catches...we have got a young team, still a learning one."
Despite acknowledging the team's youth, Gambhir dismissed it as an excuse for the loss. "Every defeat is bad...A young team is not an excuse. We represent 140 crore proud Indians...We will turn up every Test match thinking that we can win."
Gambhir also confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah would only play two more Test matches in the series to manage his workload. The specific matches are yet to be decided.
"Before he came on the show, it was already decided that he's going to play three Test matches...We haven't decided which two other Test matches he's going to play," Gambhir explained. He expressed confidence in the remaining bowlers to compete effectively.
