Following their victory in the opening Test in Barbados, Australia could receive a further boost with Steve Smith potentially joining the squad for the second Test against the West Indies in Grenada.
Smith had been sidelined after dislocating a finger during the World Test Championship Final and subsequently returned home to New York for rehabilitation, causing him to miss the first Test match.
Captain Pat Cummins has indicated that Smith has resumed batting practice. Cummins stated that Smith had been practicing in New York using a tennis ball. He also mentioned Smith's wound is showing positive signs of recovery. The next step involves Smith joining the squad and participating in net sessions to assess his readiness.
The absence of Smith, coupled with Marnus Labuschagne's exclusion, exposed vulnerabilities in Australia's top order during the first Test, despite their eventual win. They were precariously placed at 22/3 in the first innings and 65/4 in the second. Cummins, however, expressed confidence in the team's young batsmen.
Cummins acknowledged the challenging nature of the wicket, noting the scarcity of substantial partnerships throughout the game. He emphasized the unique challenges Test cricket presents, particularly for emerging players who must adapt to diverse conditions to remain effective.
The second Test match, marking the first ever Test held in Grenada, is scheduled to commence on July 3rd.
