In a deeply personal and public appeal, Grandmaster Levon Aronian has addressed an open letter to his longtime friend and former World Champion, Vladimir Kramnik, urging reconciliation following a defamation lawsuit filed by Kramnik that has shaken the chess world.

"Dear Vladimir Kramnik, forgive me for addressing you publicly," Aronian began, his tone marked by respect and concern rather than anger or criticism.
This letter arrives shortly after Kramnik initiated a civil defamation case in Geneva against Chess.com, news outlet Chessdom, and Czech GM David Navara, accusing them of defamation related to public disputes regarding alleged cheating in online chess.
Aronian’s letter is both a heartfelt tribute and a public attempt at de-escalation. He acknowledges Kramnik’s profound influence on his career, referring to him as one of his "chess parents" and attributing a significant portion of his chess knowledge to the former World Champion.
He reflects on Kramnik's career milestones, from his victories over Garry Kasparov and Peter Leko to the infamous "Toiletgate" match against Veselin Topalov, highlighting his resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
However, Aronian directly addresses what he perceives as a troubling shift in Kramnik's recent behavior. "You are fighting your own demons," he writes, recognizing the emotional burden of Kramnik’s campaign against perceived cheating in online chess.
The letter follows a period of tension. Earlier this year, Kramnik suggested that Navara had cheated, leading Navara to publish a letter detailing the severe impact of these accusations on his mental well-being.
Kramnik responded by demanding either legal action or silence, ultimately resulting in the lawsuit, a decision that has drawn criticism from across the chess community.
Grandmasters such as Pavel Eljanov have voiced public support for Navara, with Eljanov stating, "David is one of the most honest people in chess," a sentiment shared by many.
Aronian concludes his plea with a message of unity: "We are a family... let us start from a fresh page." In a chess world grappling with division, his message underscores the complexity of human relationships beyond the black and white squares of the chessboard, suggesting that reconciliation remains a possibility.
