Yashasvi Jaiswal, the dynamic Indian opener, is on the cusp of making history as he approaches a significant milestone. He is just 97 runs short of becoming the fastest Indian batsman to reach 2,000 Test runs. The talented left-hander has the opportunity to eclipse Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record, set 49 years ago, when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, commencing on July 2nd.
Jaiswal’s consistent performance has been a major positive for India, particularly during this transitional phase in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley demonstrated his exceptional talent, although it wasn't enough to prevent India from losing by five wickets. Despite setting a formidable target of 371 runs for England, the home side, led by impressive performances from Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, secured a calm and composed victory, giving them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Despite the team's setback, Jaiswal’s individual form remains a beacon of hope for India as they look to rebound at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs is held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved this feat in his 23rd Test in 1976. Gavaskar later became the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Following him are Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who both reached the 2,000-run mark in their 25th Tests.
With his stylish strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal now has a golden opportunity to not only join this elite group but also surpass them, providing India with a much-needed boost in what is essentially a must-win Test match.
