Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his concern over the proliferation of fake quotes attributed to him on sports websites and social media. He urged fans to verify information and not blindly believe everything they read online, especially from unverified sources. Gavaskar, currently commentating on the India-England Test series, highlighted the issue after fabricated remarks circulated following India's loss at Headingley.

In a video message shared on his official Instagram account, Gavaskar directly addressed the issue, highlighting the misrepresentation of comments he never actually made. He implored fans and followers to exercise caution and critical thinking when encountering such statements online.

"Over the last few months, it has come to my notice that a lot of sports websites and individual accounts have been attributing comments and quotes to me that I've never made," Gavaskar stated in the video. He urged everyone to "verify, fact-check, and not to believe everything that they read, particularly coming from some of these individual accounts and sports websites."

The legendary cricketer's statement comes amid a surge of fabricated "quotes" attributed to him, particularly following India's first Test loss at Headingley. These false attributions often surfaced after Rishabh Pant’s twin centuries and Jasprit Bumrah’s significant bowling spells. Gavaskar’s actual commentary, including a playful callback to his Melbourne remark about Pant, was distorted by some platforms to generate engagement.
