Former England captain Nasser Hussain has shared his thoughts on Jofra Archer's inclusion in England's Test squad. While acknowledging the potential benefits, Hussain urges caution regarding his immediate entry into the playing XI for the second Test against India at Edgbaston.
Archer, who last participated in a Test match in February 2021, has been named in the squad for the second Test, commencing on July 2nd. The 30-year-old has been struggling with persistent elbow and back injuries for several years. He recently made his return to red-ball cricket for Sussex, bowling 18 overs against Durham and securing figures of 1/32.
Hussain, in his conversation with Sky Sports, highlighted the emotional and physical challenges Archer has faced: "Firstly, it's great news for Archer and England. Jofra must have endured a lot with those injuries, the rehab, the pain, and the mental frustration of repeated injuries and comebacks. It's fantastic to see him back in the squad… he hasn't played a Test match in four years."
However, the former captain advised against rushing Archer into the XI for Edgbaston. "I think it's too risky this week, but it might have gone exceptionally well – I'm not familiar with Jofra Archer's physical condition. They might decide, 'we'll play you this week'. Then the question arises: who do you leave out?"
Despite these reservations, Hussain remains optimistic about the long-term advantages of Archer's return. "I believe it's a gamble worth taking, but I'm uncertain if it's wise to take it this week. I would consider it a week later at Lord's."
England currently leads the five-match series 1-0 following their five-wicket victory at Leeds. The remainder of the squad remains unchanged for Edgbaston.
