Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has called on captain Shubman Gill to strategically utilize all-rounder Shardul Thakur more effectively in the upcoming second Test match, following India's defeat to England in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. Thakur's underwhelming performance in the first Test saw him score a mere five runs across both innings and secure only two wickets in the 16 overs he bowled.
Ajinkya Rahane suggests new bowling strategy for Shardul Thakur.
Rahane highlighted the significance of an effective all-rounder via his YouTube channel, focusing on what he perceived as Thakur's under-utilization during the recent Test.
"I feel an all-rounder's role is very important. Shardul Thakur is an experienced player and has performed well in Test cricket overseas. I'd like to see him bowl more overs. If the Indian team can use Shardul Thakur in a better way, it would be really beneficial. From what I've observed, he can swing the ball both ways and is a genuine wicket-taker. If Shardul gets the chance to bowl first change, or even with the new ball, he can generate movement in both directions," Rahane stated.
Rahane proposed specific adjustments to the bowling strategy to optimize Thakur's impact on the game.
"With the Dukes ball, it typically starts to show its true characteristics after 10 to 12 overs. If Shardul can open the bowling with Bumrah, and Siraj comes in as the first change, that would be excellent. I want to see Shardul bowling more overs. Give him that freedom; he will get you more wickets."
Rahane acknowledged Jasprit Bumrah's efforts in the first innings, while emphasizing the importance of support from other bowlers. "Bumrah's five-wicket haul in the first innings was outstanding. Besides the wickets, I was impressed by his intent. The way he was running in his run-up. His intensity throughout his bowling was incredible. The lines and lengths that he bowled were spot on. He maintained an aggressive approach throughout."
"What I would like to see is support from the other end. Bumrah is clearly bowling attacking lengths, but it would be great if he receives support from Siraj and Prasidh. You don't want Bumrah to be under too much pressure and end up bowling too many overs, which would put pressure on the team. I want to see Siraj taking on that responsibility, and also Prasidh, if he plays in the second Test match," he concluded.
