Harvansh Singh Pangalia, the young India U-19 wicketkeeper, lives by a simple yet powerful motto: "Trying to do better." This mantra, drawn from an iconic scene in the Spider-Man movie, fuels his ambition and dedication to the sport.
The dialogue, from Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 2, sees Peter Parker responding to a critique with the simple phrase: "Trying to do better." Harvansh explains, "There's something about that scene, that dialogue... The answer gives me goosebumps."
The young cricketer recently showcased his explosive batting talent in a practice match against Young Lions Invitational XI, where he scored a remarkable century off just 52 balls. Coming in at 251/7, he smashed nine sixes, propelling India to a massive total of 442/9. His jaw-dropping knock has made him a sensation on social media.
Despite the online buzz, Harvansh remains grounded. Reflecting on his innings, he humorously stated, "I was struggling... But then something happened. Something snapped, aap keh sakte ho ki maata aa gayi (you could say I was possessed!)."
Hailing from Gandhidham, a town in Gujarat, Harvansh draws inspiration from his father and uncle, both former wicketkeepers. While his father now works as a truck driver in Canada to support the family, Harvansh stays in India with his mother to pursue his cricketing dream.
"Whenever I step out to bat, I see the faces of my mother and father," he said. "They have sacrificed so much for me."
Harvansh is determined to reunite his parents and believes nothing will stand in his way. He admires Yuvraj Singh's World Cup-winning mentality and is also inspired by the late Kobe Bryant's work ethic.
He also aspires to play Test cricket for India, drawing inspiration from Virat Kohli's view that Test cricket is the ultimate test of a player's character. " Test ka naam test hai because it tests your character. I love playing four-day cricket. That's the ultimate cricket," he said.
While his teammates have already tasted IPL success, Harvansh remains focused on his own journey. " Mera bhi time aayega (My time will come as well)," he asserted.
India U19 is set to face England U19 in the first Youth ODI at Hove. All eyes will be on Harvansh as he continues to strive for improvement, guided by his Spider-Man-inspired mantra.
