Jos Buttler, alongside former pacer Stuart Broad, dissected England's impressive victory over India in the first Test at Headingley, suggesting that the team was capable of achieving an even more ambitious target than the 371 runs they successfully chased.
Ben Stokes congratulates Jamie Smith after the winning the first Test Match against India.
In their YouTube podcast 'For The Love of Cricket', the pair highlighted England's aggressive approach and identified pivotal moments that shifted the game's momentum.
India initially dominated, posting a formidable 471 in their first innings, thanks to centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. However, England responded strongly, narrowing the deficit to just six runs. India then scored 364 in their third innings, setting England a target of 371, which they chased down emphatically, propelled by a magnificent 149 from Ben Duckett and a steady performance from Jamie Smith.
Buttler confidently stated, "I think it would've come down to time, but even if they were chasing 450, they'd have given it a go. They cruised that 370," emphasizing England's fluency and control during the final innings.
He acknowledged that a higher target would entail greater risk, but asserted that England's batting lineup, particularly the top seven, possessed the necessary firepower and self-belief. “They’d have had to take more risks, but they’d definitely have had a go at it,” Buttler emphasized.
This sentiment aligns with Ben Stokes' consistent emphasis on avoiding draws, a defining characteristic of England's Bazball philosophy. Under the guidance of coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes' leadership, England has consistently pursued challenging fourth-innings targets with unwavering determination.
With a 1-0 lead and momentum on their side, England is heading to Edgbaston with a statement win, demonstrating their clear intention to continue pushing the limits.
