Ahead of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025, co-hosts Switzerland experienced a significant setback, suffering a 7-1 defeat against an Under-15 boys' team from Luzern in a friendly match held behind closed doors.
News of the unexpected scoreline emerged on social media after a Luzern youth player reportedly shared clips of the game on TikTok, according to Swiss news outlet Blick. The footage, which was later deleted, featured prominent players like Juventus forward Alisha Lehmann and Alayah Pilgrim and reportedly attracted over 70,000 views. Lehmann, a popular figure in women's football, boasts a substantial following of nearly 17 million on Instagram.
This isn't the first instance of the Swiss women's team facing youth teams as part of their Euro preparations. Previously, they were defeated 2-1 by FC Solothurn's U-15 squad but managed a narrow 2-1 victory against FC Biel's U-15s.
The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has addressed the surprising result, emphasizing the nature and purpose of such matches. SFV spokesperson Sven Micosse explained, "It's not uncommon in women's football to compete against junior teams. The goal is to bring a certain competitive element. The focus during this phase of preparation is on the physical aspect. Regardless of the result, these training matches are very similar to our international matches in terms of intensity and mileage."
Switzerland, having automatically qualified for Euro 2025 as co-hosts, are scheduled to play a formal friendly against Czechia on Thursday. Their tournament campaign will begin on July 2 against Norway.
