Neeraj Chopra, India's Olympic champion in javelin, has made a surprising pick for a cricketer who could potentially dominate the javelin throw. During a recent segment on Star Sports, hosted by Navjot Singh Sidhu, Chopra suggested that Indian cricket team's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah possesses the necessary attributes to excel in the sport.
Chopra's assessment stems from the physical attributes and techniques inherent in fast bowlers. He specifically emphasized Bumrah's fitness and strength as crucial factors that would translate well to javelin throwing, had he not already been a successful cricketer.
"I think it would be a fast bowler for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah will be good at it," Chopra stated on Star Sports, highlighting Bumrah's athletic capabilities.
Bumrah's recent performance in cricket reinforces this point. In the first Test match against England at Headingley, he demonstrated his physical prowess by securing his 14th five-wicket haul in the first innings.
The discussion about Bumrah's potential in javelin throw underscores the crossover of athletic abilities between cricket and track and field, particularly the similarities in physical demands between fast bowling and javelin throwing.
This announcement coincides with the promotion of the upcoming Neeraj Chopra Classic javelin throw event, scheduled for July 5 and to be broadcast on Star Sports.
