Phil Simmons, the head coach of Bangladesh, has left the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka to consult with doctors in London. Contrary to speculation, this departure is not related to a performance review by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Simmons had a pre-scheduled medical appointment in the UK.
The Bangladesh team manager, Nafees Iqbal, confirmed that Simmons is expected to rejoin the squad on July 7, in time for the third ODI match. Following the ODI series, Bangladesh is scheduled to play three T20Is against Sri Lanka.
Iqbal stated, "Phil Simmons is leaving for two days for personal reasons. He had a doctor's appointment in February, which he had to postpone due to the Champions Trophy. This appointment could not be rescheduled. He informed the board before the tour and planned accordingly. He departs today and will be back on July 7."
The Bangladesh team has struggled to find consistency on this tour. After a promising draw in the first Test, they lost the second Test, conceding the series to Sri Lanka. They also experienced a batting collapse in the first ODI, resulting in a loss.
