Liverpool players will attend the funeral of Diogo Jota, the 28-year-old forward, and his brother André Silva in Portugal this Saturday, according to an ESPN source.
The Portugal and Liverpool forward, along with his brother, tragically died in a car crash in northern Spain on Wednesday evening. Reports indicate they were en route to Santander to catch a ferry to England, ahead of Jota's anticipated return to training with the Premier League champions on Monday.
The funeral service for the brothers is scheduled for Saturday at the Matriz de Gondomar church, situated 33 kilometers from Porto. Family and friends gathered on Friday to pay their respects at a wake.
A source confirmed to ESPN that members of the Liverpool squad will travel to Portugal on Saturday morning to attend the funeral.
Jota maintained close ties to Gondomar, where he began his playing career. He and his parents owned homes in the working-class town near Porto, his birthplace.
Several Liverpool players, including Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk, have publicly shared their grief and tributes to Jota.
Liverpool's head coach, Arne Slot, and the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, have also released statements honoring the player's memory.
In light of the tragic events, Liverpool has postponed the team's return to preseason training, which was originally scheduled for Monday.
