Former England cricketer Mark Butcher has shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate surrounding Jasprit Bumrah's potential participation in the second Test at Edgbaston. He emphasized the importance of India prioritizing the team's objectives over individual workload management considerations.
Butcher's comments come as India seeks to rebound from their 1-0 series deficit against England, following England's remarkable 371-run chase in the fourth innings at Headingley. While Bumrah impressed in the first innings with a 5/83 performance, he went wicketless in the second, as England dominated.
"Bumrah is going to be a huge talking point as to whether or not this is one of his three Test matches," Butcher stated to Wisden. "I think it has to be, it absolutely has to be. Six-day break after Headingley, 1-0 down, he plays. I know he wants to play at Lord's but the needs of the team and the series are more important than his wish to play a Test at Lord's."
Currently, the decision regarding Bumrah's inclusion hinges on pitch conditions, as confirmed by Captain Gill, who clarified that Bumrah is available for selection. "We will take a call after looking at the surface," Gill said.
If Bumrah is rested for the Edgbaston Test, Mohammed Siraj is likely to spearhead the pace attack, potentially supported by Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna.
Butcher further stressed the urgency for India to level the series, suggesting that Bumrah's rotation should be a secondary concern. "And who knows, he might get through this one okay and be fine for Lord's, and then you take your chances at the back-end," he concluded.
