Pant Aims to Surpass Kohli in Prestigious Test Ranking During England Clash
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is poised to make history as the second Test against England commences at Edgbaston. Following his spectacular consecutive centuries in the series opener at Headingley, Pant is now on the verge of surpassing Virat Kohli in an esteemed record.
Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli discuss strategy on the field.
Pant's aggressive batting style proved challenging for England's bowlers in the first Test, where he delivered impressive scores of 134 and 118 across two innings. Despite his efforts, India was unable to defend a target of 371, as England secured the win by five wickets, leading 1-0 in the five-match series.
As he enters the second Test, Pant has already achieved five centuries against England in Test matches, matching Kohli's record. Should he score another century in Birmingham, he will overtake Kohli and equal Mohammed Azharuddin, who holds six Test centuries against England. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid have surpassed this, each with seven centuries.
Pant's performance in England highlights his proficiency in adapting to the local conditions. Across 10 Tests and 19 innings, he has accumulated 808 runs with an average of 42.52, including four centuries and two half-centuries.
If Pant manages to score another century at Edgbaston, he will join an exclusive group as only the seventh visiting batter to achieve centuries in three consecutive Tests in England. This distinguished list features legends such as Don Bradman, Brian Lara, and Rahul Dravid, with Dravid being the sole Indian player to accomplish this feat back in 2002.
With India aiming to level the series, Pant's form could significantly influence the outcome at Edgbaston. All eyes will be on the dynamic left-hander, anticipating whether he will break further records while sustaining India's aspirations.
