Elon Musk, a vocal critic of OpenAI and its ChatGPT, is pushing for greater accessibility in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Staying true to his vision, his AI venture, xAI, is set to open source its Grok chatbot this week.
Musk announced the move on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, "This week, @xAI will open source Grok."
In essence, open-sourcing a software like a chatbot grants everyone access to the source code, enabling redistribution of the software projects. Open-source software offers enterprises the advantage of exploring diverse solutions to problems, rather than depending solely on internal teams.
Amidst this announcement, a user suggested that OpenAI should follow suit and open source its models.
The user stated, "OpenAI should do the same if they are 'open' that is." Musk responded sharply, "OpenAI is a lie."
Musk has previously expressed his inclination towards open-source AI. During a podcast with Lex Fridman in November of the previous year, he stated, "I am generally in favour of open sourcing, like biassed towards open sourcing."
His comments followed the release of Grok by xAI, which reportedly took four months to develop. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, responded with a post demonstrating how he purportedly built a similar chatbot using GPT Builder with a single prompt, taking a jab at xAI's efforts.
Altman quipped, "GPTs can save a lot of effort."
Musk responded to Altman's jab, stating, "GPT-4 is about as funny as a screendoor on a submarine."
